Routes into Languages is a nationwide initiative funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in which nine regional consortia work with young people to increase uptake of language study at GCSE level and beyond. Other key priorities include the promotion of work and study abroad opportunities, raising the aspirations and attainments of pupils to widen access to language study and increasing collaboration between universities, schools and key organisations.
The Routes into Languages North East consortium is based at Newcastle University, in partnership with Durham University, Northumbria University, the University of Sunderland and Teesside University. Led by Dr Elizabeth Andersen as Consortium Director, here in the North East we have established firm ties with a wide variety of relevant partners, including the Open University, the British Council, Europe Direct North East, the Association for Language Learning , Théâtre Sans Frontières and local European Consulates to name but a few.
Our work takes us to a wide variety of schools, from Berwick upon Tweed in the north of the region to Yarm in the south. Regular activities include Language Roadshows, masterclasses and Film Study Days, whilst exciting online resources for young language learners are also offered in the form of Linguacast. We run regional contests such as the Foreign Language Spelling Bee and the Mother Tongue, Other Tongue poetry competition and bring together pupils in their hundreds at our annual Beat the Rat Race and Festival of International Culture events. All of our activities are supported by a team of student language ambassadors who serve as inspiring role models, with bespoke school visits offered for pupils and parents throughout the year ahead of key transition stages such as GCSE option choices and AS and A Level choices.
