This little boy came to one of the reading sessions I ran on a French campsite this summer with a book by the same author called “Une farce”: I and the other children present all joined in and loved it, so when I saw this book at a “vide-grenier”… well I had to buy it!!

Language of text: French
Author and publisher: Audrey Poussier at l’école des loisirs
Intended age of students: Key Stage 1/2
Source reference: 9782211206266

Approaches:

This story of animals asking a rabbit if he can imitate other animals (he can’t but that’s not all of it!) could be used to introduce or reinforce animals in French.
The onomatopoeia are great for introducing or reinforcing French phonics.
As there isn’t much writing and it is repetitive, this can be used with little one.

Rationale:
Beware: only use this book on a day when you are prepared to have the children join in and make some noise… because I feel that reading this book and not letting them take part in the animal noises would be cruel!
The story is great because there is a twist at the end and you can potentially give your pupils a little bit of a fright too!

Outcomes:
The children will thoroughly enjoy the story with all the animal noises, reading them, joining in with them, trying to guess which animal is coming next and what noise the rabbit is going to do… They will like the graphics too as well as the attitude of the rabbit!

Topics or themes:
Animal; awareness of onomatopoeia and how they differ in different languages

Grammar:
The irregular verb “savoir”

How much time required:

20-30 minutes
