My cousin gave me this book because she had multiple copies of it. I am so glad she did, it is a classic used in many French schools!

I want to read this story and see if the children can work out what happens, who is the most cunning, who tricks whom…
On 1st reading, the children can join in and say “plouf” whenever someone falls into the water and “raté” when they miss! “Raté” will become a very popular phrase in class when playing games in French!
Rationale:
The language in this book is very repetitive, thus making the story accessible, but also very rich and full of very useful phrases like “j’ai faim/froid”. It is also full of fun onomatopoeia which the children will love learning and joining in with.
Outcomes:
The story can be used to teach or reinforce a grammatical point of the teacher’s choice.
The pupils can easily take on roles and reenact the story, with or without puppets; the teacher can be the narrator. They could change the animals and think of ways they could trick each animal into going into the well, which could help reinforce dictionary skills.
