This is my 1st ever blog on a Spanish story! If you know me, you will be aware that I am French and did my degree in English and German; I only started learning Spanish in February 2014 so am not a specialist; however I taught Spanish at KS2 for 5 years and I love reading stories in Spanish too! So here is my favourite one so far!
Language of text : Spanish
Author or source : Ana y Andres Guerrero
Intended age of students : Key Stage 2/3
Source reference : 9788466793124
Approaches :
(Sorry about the lack of accents, I don’t know how to do them on this computer !)
I normally read this story as a one-off, as a treat, but am sure other teachers could be inspired to do more with it !
Rationale :
This is a very sweet story which the children will not know (authentic) and will adore. The language is quite difficult ( I am not a Spanish specialist and had to look a few words up !) but the story is actually very easy to follow with the pictures and appropriate questioning.
Outcomes :
The children will use their deduction skills when you read this story to them and ask them questions like : what is the dragon’s name ? What is his problem ? What is the Spanish word for doctor ? What do you think will happen next? Can you spot a colour ? How long did the fire burn for? Please contact me for more ideas!!
Topics or themes :
Weather (cold/hot) ; love and friendship.
Grammar :
The past tense in Spanish ; good examples of extended sentences.
Strategies :
This story could be used to focus on a certain sound, “o” for example and get the children to write as many words as they can with that sound in it.
How much time required :
20 minutes to a lesson
