Below are some of my ideas with it.

Approaches:
I first read the story then ask the children what they think it was about, in English; as they volunteer information, I give them the main vocabulary in French, e.g. when they mention a cake we talk about galette des rois.
I then ask them to listen and watch again and look for any unexpected things happening in the story, e.g. they may spot an animal hiding under the table. I explain those traditions and add more phrases.
Next, I ask the children to listen and keep a tally of selected words that I want them to pick up on: depending on the age and ability of the class, it could be Trotro, galette, fève, roi etc. Afterwards, we go through the whole story and exactly what happens in it, then hopefully recreate the occasion (I get to make a galette with my Y6 classes every year).
There is a list of ingredients needed for a galette in the front of the book and a recipe itself in the back… so if you have a kitchen available and no children with allergies, go for it, they will love making it! I normally make one for each of my 2 Year 6 classes – so different pupils have a taste every year and they all have a turn. Alternatively you could use the list of ingredients as a reading activity with younger children and the recipe itself with older children. They would love to take the recipe home – I am sure some of them would end up making a galette there!
Rationale:
This book is a lovely, straight-forward story with a focus on French culture: what we do for Epiphany on 6th January. I love the authenticity and simplicity of it: it makes it meaningful and accessible to learners of French. For instance click here for the rhyme “am stram gram” which helps you make a choice in French!
Outcomes:
The children, after sharing this story, will know about many traditions associated with the galette des rois; they will also know vocabulary and phrases that relate to it.
