I can’t believe I haven’t written a blog about this book before ! It is the story which got me where I am today… I had been sharing it with Y1-Y6 in a local school as part of their French day in June 2014 and told the head teacher how much I had enjoyed it… to which he replied that it was because I was so good with the kids and so good at telling the story… It got me thinking and a year on I was back at the school with le Bibliobook !! I am skipping a few stages because this blog is about the book not me, sorry !

When you decide you want to buy this amazing book… here is the link for it on Little Linguist.

Language of text : French
Type of text : picture book
Author or source : Leo Lionni
Intended age of students : Key Stage 1/2
Source reference : 221101713

Approaches :
This story can be used as a one-off (that’s how I originally used it) but from September 2015 to December 2015 I based my Y3 French scheme of work around it to… and I feel it worked !! The best way to 1st share this book though I feel is in 2 parts… so you leave the children wanting more !!
Please get in touch if you want more details about how I used the book to introduce French to Y3 pupils and it was the basis of our work for a term. I have a class set of them which you are welcome to borrow too if you are interested.

Rationale :
I love using this story because you can keep stopping your reading/telling to ask the pupils what they think will happen next… they come up with some cracking ideas !! It is really engaging and appeals to little ones as well as bigger children !

Outcomes :
The children will enjoy greeting the characters as they encounter them in the story and designing/writing about them in their books. They will use thinking skills (deduction and prediction) as you question them throughout. They will feel real emotions (a roller coaster of emotions !) and will be relieved at the end !

Topics or themes :
Colours (including mixing colours) ; friendship ; creativity

Grammar :
3rd person plural of -er verbs ; adjectival agreements

How much time required : 30 minutes to a term
