This was my daughter’s book when she was small… she is now 14!!
Language of text: French
Type of text: picture book
Author or source: Thierry & Sophie Courtin
Intended age of students: Key Stage 1/2
Source reference: 978209202037
Approaches:
This book is about the day T’choupi makes a snowman with his friend Lalou… but it won’t last for ever!
You can share the story with your pupils, read it throughout 1st. On second reading, they can join in physically with actions which you show to them and orally with “bonhomme de neige” every time it comes up.
Rationale:
I like this story because it is simple enough for little ones who wil be able to understand what happens, join in with it and enjoy thinking about snow and snowmen! It also helps them to accept that it is ok when the snowman melts because they have a photo to help them remember it.
Outcomes:
The children will remember “bonhomme de neige” for ever after sharing this story with you!
They can practise longer sentences: you could show them the words cailloux, carotte, chapeau and ask them to match them up with yeux, nez, tête; then the children have to practise, orally (with actions!) or in writing depending on their age and ability, “On met des cailloux pour les yeux / une carotte pour le nex / un chapeau sur la tête”. They can draw and label in French their own snowman too.
If suitable, you may choose to share this story on a snowy day so the pupils make a snowman whist practising the French words for body parts and what they are using to make them!
Topics or themes:
(cold) weather, winter, body parts
Grammar:
3dr person with “on” (on est, on a, on fait, on raccompagne); high frequency adjectives (petit, grand, bon, beau; also fort, lourd) and their positions in the sentence
